Literary Magazines That Reopen Submissions in The Fall

It’s nearly Labor Day, which means the literary crowd is soon to return to their desks to tackle the submissions season. To help you out, we’ve listed a few of our favorite literary magazines that reopen to submissions in the fall. Enjoy and good luck!

AGNI – Looks for the honest voice, the idiosyncratic signature, experimental where necessary, but not willfully so. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

Antioch Review – One of the oldest, continuously publishing literary magazines in America, Antioch publishes fiction, essays, and poetry from both emerging as well as established authors. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

The Brooklyn Review – A great place to submit experimental, flash, and multimedia works. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

Crazyhorse – Crazyhorse has been publishing the best established & emerging writers for over 50 years. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

The Iowa Review – They are only open to non-contest submissions in the fall. Act now. September 1, 2014.

The Kenyon Review – The Kenyon Review continues to publish new and emerging authors as well as established literary favorites. They are open to submissions September 15, 2014.

The Missouri Review – The Missouri Review labels it’s Editors’ Prize as “not just any contest!” and, yeah. For a chance at $5000, submissions are due by October 1, 2014.

The Normal School – They are particularly interested in essays that challenge established norms for the genre or that don’t seem to fit in easy categories of classification. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

Passages North – This lit mag publishes new and established authors and has a great taste for design and story. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

The Southern Review – The Southern Review publishes fiction, poetry, critical essays, interviews, book reviews, and excerpts from novels in progress, with emphasis on contemporary literature in the United States and abroad. They are open to submissions September 1, 2014.

Third Coast – Third Coast is one of the nation’s premier literary magazines—and one of only a handful of nationally distributed literary magazines to regularly include four genres. They are open to submissions September 15, 2014.

Tin House – One of the major heavy hitters of the literary scene, this all-time favorite opens for submissions on September 4, 2014.

TriQuarterly – TriQuarterly welcomes submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, short drama, video essays, and hybrid work from established as well as emerging writers. Short-shorts too! They are open to submissions October 16, 2014.

Zeotrope Contest – Ben Fountain is judging literary-giant Zeotrope’s fiction contest. Entries are due by October 1, 2014.
