Litmag Roadmap: North Dakota

June 16, 2023

The next stop on our litmag roadmap tour: North Dakota! Cole Meyer leads us today on a tour through the literary institutions of the Peace Garden State. Buckle up!

Though their numbers are few, these North Dakota literary outlets are not to be trifled with! And when you’re done checking these out, pop down south of the border and revisit the lit mags of South Dakota.

North Dakota Quarterly

The premier literary publication of North Dakota, North Dakota Quarterly has been publishing for over one hundred years, and recently released their 90th volume. Submissions are open during the academic year and the Quarterly publishes fiction, poetry and nonfiction. Not satisfied? Try their recipe for The Quarterly, a twist on a Negroni and a Boulevardier.

Northern Eclecta

Published by undergraduate students at North Dakota State University, Northern Eclecta began as Carbon World in 1995 before rebranding to the current moniker in 2007. Initially open only to students at NDSU, Northern Eclecta now takes submissions from writers around the world to publish in their annual volume. Northern Eclecta publishes work in accordance with an annual theme selected by its staff, and considers all forms of creative expression: fiction, poetry, and visual art, including videography, published online under the Extended Pieces section!

North Dakota State University Press

Though not a literary magazine, North Dakota State University Press should not be overlooked by writers seeking a home for their manuscripts. The press has been active for over seventy years, and has won numerous awards for their publications, including a 2023 1st Runner-Up in  Eric Hoffer Award for Poetry Chapbooks. Though the scope of the press is not limited by topic, they are only seeking work which engages with a regional focus. Midwestern writers, this is your opportunity!

At The Masters Review, our mission is to support emerging writers. We only accept submissions from writers who can benefit from a larger platform: typically, writers without published novels or story collections or with low circulation. We publish fiction and nonfiction online year-round and put out an annual anthology of the ten best emerging writers in the country, judged by an expert in the field. We publish craft essays, interviews and book reviews and hold workshops that connect emerging and established writers.
