The Flash Challenge Winner & Shortlist!

April 9, 2026

We’re happy to say our first Flash Challenge was a success! We read hundreds of fabulous flash fictions and essays, and one winner emerged: Congratulations to Mario Aliberto III, whose “Searching for God in a Mosh Pit” will be published this summer! A round of applause as well to our runners-up, Jim Humes and C.E. McKenna, and every author on our shortlist. And be sure to polish up your flash for this year’s Flash Challenge, opening in November!

At The Masters Review, our mission is to support emerging writers. We only accept submissions from writers who can benefit from a larger platform: typically, writers without published novels or story collections or with low circulation. We publish fiction and nonfiction online year-round and put out an annual anthology of the ten best emerging writers in the country, judged by an expert in the field. We publish craft essays, interviews and book reviews and hold workshops that connect emerging and established writers.
